Creating separate DUN

I need to create two different Dial Up Networking icons -- One for regular phone call (local) to my ISP and one for calling card for long distance calls to my ISP. I tried to create two icons and named them "Local" and "Calling Card" and then I set up two different dialing procedures (one with no calling card and another one with calling card) in Telephony and then tried to set the Local icon to "Local" calling properties and then set the Calling Card icon to "Calling Card" properties but this also changes the calling properties for Local!

I **really** need to get them to store two different calling procedures because in my Outlook Express, I'm not able to choose my calling method without having to open My Computer icon, then DUN folder, double-click on the DUN and then choose my preferred calling method.

    TIA.

Brent, dialing properties are stored in the modem. You may need to "reinstall" your modem (call it modem2 or something), and then use THAT modem for the 2nd DUN. I'm not SURE this will work, but don't know why it wouldn't.

What an interesting idea this is! I'll try that and let you know if it works or not.

    Thanks a million.

"dialing properties are stored in the modem"??

For a new dial up connection all one needs to do is run the "Network and Dial Up Connection" wizard and it will make a new selection in the dial up pane, but you must NOT have the auto dial turned on, other wise you will not see the selection list.

So, if I turn off Auto-Dial then whenever I fire up Outlook Express, it wouldn't dial to my ISP automatically? If so, how do I get it to dial to the ISP? My dad is blind and he relies on using screen reader (a program that "talks" to my dad, describing the screen). The more automated his Windows 98 is, the better.

This is one of the problems, when setting a machine with special needs, you can not have your cake and eat it. The machine needs to set up for your dad's use and everyone else must work with that or get another machine.

You should be able to put the new DUN icon on the desktop, which will dial up and make the connection and then select the IE icon and since you have a connection, it should not try to dial. Turn the 'Auto dial' off in only the new DUN.

If I had know this was a special needs machine I would have addressed the question differently.

My apologies for not mentioning that. I had assumed that it wouldn't have had made any difference.

My dad is the only one who actually uses the laptop, unfortunately, he needs two different dialing rules -- one to dial 9 before using calling card for hotels and one to NOT dial 9 before using calling card for use at my home. I'll try your suggestion and see if it works, although it would have to wait until November, when he comes back.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
