You can't edit files with the viewer.

While I know that animated gifs can not be used in office 97, is there a way around it. Can I down load the 2000 or xp viewer and just add my gifs to the office 97 file then view then that ppt with the 2000 viewer.. If so where can i get the viewer.

If you can't put the animated gif directly, you might like to try something like this:

.Use an animation editor to edit the gif. There's one available with Paintshop Pro- Ainimation shop, which you can download a 30-day trial from http://www.jasc.com. This will enable you to break the animation apart into individual frames.

.Export each frame into Paint Shop Pro as a static gif; save them.

    In PPT, reanimate, quoting WebGenii

by layering the image in place with each layer of the image changed slightly and animated to dim (disappear) after arriving.

You may have to play around with the timing of the frames. Animation Shop gives you the duration of each frame- you will need to apply something like that in PPT.
