Missing Icons for Office 2K files (Office 2000/SR-1)

Here's what happened. I installed O2K on my laptop running Win2K Pro but as a member of the Power User group instead of as the Administrator. Thinking that I probably shouldn't have done that, I uninstalled O2K using the Control Panel app. I then logged in as Admin and reinstalled O2K. OK, everything looks good, I have O2K apps available as Admin and as standard user. All O2K files have the right icons as long as I am logged in as Admin. But when I am logged in as a normal user, the icons for the O2K files are all the generic icon. So I tried reinstalling/repairing O2K when I was logged in a normal user, no joy. When I try to change the icons associated with an O2K file, say .doc, using the Tools|Folder Options menu I get an error message looking for WORDICON.EXE in the ...Installer{00010409...998E7} folder. How do I get the icons reset?

You may be able to do this (long shot) by re-registering your apps. Hit Start-Run and type (for instance):

    winword.exe /regserver

Yep, there's a space before the slash. Program must be closed when you do it. This "should" reregister the apps with Windows.

Otherwise, I cannot find anything about this error or file.

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately that didn't work. I'm thinking of completely removing Office 2K following the KB article (#Q252566) and then reinstalling. But I'm reluctant to do that right now hoping for something simpler.

The main icons are in winword.exe itself, at least on my system. Here's a picture: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/w3tfiles/2-66909-FileIcon.gif>http://www.wopr.com/w3tfiles/2-66909-FileIcon.gif</A>

Thanks but the problem is that I can't get past the error message for the missing file and tell Win 2K to use the WinWord.exe file. Plus I would have to manually go through each individual Office file type and hunt down the location of the icons for each type.
The correct file associations are there when I log in as the Admin but missing when I log in as a normal user. So somehow the file associations seem to be connected to the user associated keys in the registry.

Hmmm, I was misled by the dialog. It really isn't in WINWORD.EXE.

I use Windows 98, but maybe this will help anyway. The icon setting for Word is stored under:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTWord.Document.8DefaultIcon

With the very long default value:

    "c:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftInstaller{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}wordicon.exe,1"

Can you determine whether you might need to duplicate this folder under a different path to make it available while you are logged in as a user, and do that, perhaps using a network drive to store a copy? If not, I agree, there would be numerous changes to get this all straightened out.

Re: Missing Icons for Office 2K files (Office 2000/SR-1)

    Jeff,

Thanks for the suggestion. I poked around in the registry and found that all of the default icon keys used a replaceable string %APPDATA%. I then searched for APPDATA and found it defined in several spots. Not knowing which one to set to point to the folder under WINNT that contained the icon files, I decided to try what you suggested which was to duplicate the folder where WIN2k thought it was. I rebooted and there was much rejoicing as all my icons have returned! Thanks again.

If anybody out there knows how %APPDATA% is supposed to work and where to properly change it, that would probably be the more elegant solution.

%APPDATA% is the folder where your local settings are. For Win2k, it is <Drive:>Documents and Settings<User Name>Application Data, where Drive: is your boot drive (for example, F<img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> and User Name is your logon name (for example, Administrator). Don't ask me why the drive where boot files are is SYSTEM drive, and the one where Windows system files are is BOOT drive. Anyway, Application Data folder holds all your shortcuts and settings: Office Shortcut Bar shortcuts, Quick Launch Bar shortcuts, also your custom.dic, excel.xlb, ClipArt catalog (artgal50.mmc) etc. It was probably a bug in Office Setup; for the icons in Registry must be %WINDIR% instead of %APPDATA%.

Re: Missing Icons for Office 2K files (Office 2000/SR-1)

I'm not sure it is a bug in the Office setup. Since the first time I installed Office it was as a standard user, APPDATA may have been the correct place to put that data. What is probably the bug is that when I uninstalled Office before installing it properly as the Administrator, the uninstall did not delete the registry entries pointing the the APPDATA files. It did however delete the files themselves which explains why it couldn't find them later. The files were put in the WINDIR folder location when I installed as Admin.
