    Automatic E-Mail checking (Win98, IE5.5,OL2000)

I'm new to IE & OL but have used NN for years. I converted my bookmarks and address book OK but have a problem getting the system to automatically check for email. I am connected over a cable modem.

I seem to have the servers set properly and have requested "Check for new e-mail every 10 minutes". I can get my email by opening OL and clicking on the "Send/Receive" button but the automatic e-mail check seems erratic - sometimes I will be working and get a "new e-mail" message but other times I don't know that I have new email unless I check.

    Q. Do I need to have OL running (or minimized) for it to work? What about IE? How does it play in this? (With NN it would check for email when the browser but I didn't need to go to Messenger (it's e-mail client).

Is there a way of using Scheduler to check for e-mail?

My basic problem is that I would like to be informed when e-mail has arrived anytime my computer is on.

    Thanks in advance.

I have cable. I have it check my mail every 5 minutes. I'm always notified. I have to leave Outlook open, though. It doesn't have a "separate" notifier like some email programs do. There are, I believe, 3rd-party things available at www.slipstick.com. Good luck!

    Wow! An answer from a dreamboat <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30>.

Seriously, thanks for your help. I have been playing with OL since my post and keeping it open (minimized) seems to be doing the trick.

Slipstick also looks like a good resource.
