I am going to buy my son a laptop for college and was wondering if office 2007 will work on a 64 bit system. Also will most of the programs from a 32 bit system work? Thanks for your help.

The answer to both is YES. Office 2007 only comes in a 32-bit flavor and runs very well on 64-bit Vista. Almost all 32-bit programs will work on a 64-bit Vsta system.

The only thing you need to be careful of is that any device drivers must be 64-bit and must be a signed driver.

This might not be relevant to your son, but I'll mention it for others visiting this thread. The Palm HotSync program used with Centro and some Treo smartphones (e.g., 650, 680, 700p, 755p) does not work via USB on 64-bit Windows. Instead, the user has to sync using a Bluetooth connection. Many laptops have a Bluetooth radio built in.

One small annoyance is that the Insert Files as Printouts function in OneNote doesn't work on a 64 bit system. I use OneNote a lot and miss that feature.

There is no problem buying a laptop that supports 64 bits, but make sure you run a 32 bit operating system. There are too many programs out there that won't run on a 64 bit operating system and no advantage to be had except if you want to access huge amounts of memory.

I would recommend against buying a 64 bit system unless you REALLY need significantly more than 4GBytes of memory, and this is hardly likely with a laptop.

    Stuart,
Here on this side of the waters, a lot of the OEM's have gone to the 64 bit hardware with 64 bit OS.
There is NO choice other than try another OEM. This gives them the use of more memory.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
