Can't close a .pst folder (Outlook 2000)

I've got 2 .pst files open when I'm using Outlook (I'm not even sure how the 2nd one got opened) . When I try to close the 2nd one (the one without the Outlook Today icon) I get the following message:

"Operation Failed. An object could not be found".

Anyone know what's going on, or bette yet, how to close this folder?

You can't close Outlook today, at least not to my knowledge.

You may want to dump everything from the Outlook today one, and copy everything from the other one into it. Then close the other one.

Dreamboat,
Thanks for the reply. I must have misstated my problem. I'm not trying to close the folder with Outlook Today. It's the one that's just a .pst folder that I'm having the problem with.

Are you using Exchange/Outlook Corporate? (go to Help | About Microsoft Outlook)
Silverback

Help reads as follows:

Outlook SR-1 (9.0.0.3821)
Internet Mail Only.

it's a ghost - you need to edit the registry to remove it. it's under windows messaging subsystem, there will be three keys referencing the same pst. one of the two that is identical needs deleted. you need to decide which. generally, the 'bad' one is not as close to the 3rd key as the good one.

I have the exact same problem. Could you possibly give me a better idea of exactly where to look in the Registry, like which of the five screens that pop up and where within there?? Thx!! -Rich.

Re: Can't close a .pst folder (Outlook 2000)

find the messaging subsystem key. the location may vary depending on your os:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows
Messaging SubsystemProfiles

look thru the list for two keys - both will have an entry for "mspst.dll" but one will have "personal folders" the other "PSTServiceEntry". Each good pst has these two keys, the ghost will only have one. use good judgement when deciding which key is for the ghost can always rename it if you aren't sure.

Wow! What a mess of numbers in the Registry! There actually was only one entry, probably because I moved the actual .PST files around thinking that might help, but I got rid of the key, and the entry in Outlook in now gone. Thanks! -Rich.

Re: Can't close a .pst folder (Outlook 2000)

I have followed the above instructions on my installation of Outlook 2002 XP3, found the keys for three (!) ghosted PSTs in my registry and deleted them (both with Outlook closed and with it open)

Next time I launch Outlook after I have made the deletion the three PSTs appear in the folder bar after the app has completely loaded and the three registry keys return (they may or may not have different numerical names, but nonetheless three more appear after launch).

I have tried running outlook.exe /resetfolders but all this does is move the order of the PSTs in the folder view, right-clicking on them to close them still gives the 'The operation failed. An object could not be found.' error on all three.

I have been trying to find archived data, hence why I had opened older PSTs to dig around in them. I opened and closed all three PSTs many times over the space of a week, but in the end two wouldn't close down giving the error above, but the others were fine. This morning I noticed that I had three PSTs (over and above the live current one) open in the folder list, meaning that I had forgotten to try to close this one down last time I had finished using it. Lo and behold this one now wouldn't close, giving the error. I have carried out a scanpst on them all when Outlook is closed with no errors. All the PSTs are smaller than the 2GB size restriction.

Any other suggestions or things for me to look for?

Keiran

Re: Can't close a .pst folder (Outlook 2000)

I currently have two pst folders open and would like to close one but can't. I've followed the advice in this thread and have not found a solution. I had two entries for my Private.pst and deleted one and then the other; each time Outlook would refuse to let me close this pst. Then I deleted both at the same time. Outlook opened, I saw that a new entry was made in the Registry, and then Outlook refused to cooperate when I tried to close the pst. I restored the keys and when I opened Outlook I had duplicate Private.pst folders open.

A search of the entire registry failed to turn up any references to "mspst.dll".

Attached is the Windows Messaging Subsystem section from my registry (as a .txt file). Since Outlook builds a new key when it is opened, perhaps it would all sort itself out if I get rid of the entire section?
