    Thumbs down

    Hi,

I have unfortunately contracted a virus on my flash disk called "Raila Odinga". It has duplicated files galor and has done some aweful things on my flash. I need to ask advice of the windows experts on how to remove it. I am hesitant in sticking it into my laptop for fear of contaminating my PC. So how do I disinfect a virus on my flash if I cannot put it into a PC? Any ideas????

Anyone with experience on this virus....pleeeeeeaaaasee HELP!

    TX
    Regards,
    Rudi

Most of the "trusted WOPR gurus" won't have much personal experience with viruses

What Hans says is true. But I would suspect that if your system is well proteted by AV and Anti-malware software and you disable the autorun function, that you could probably connect the flash drive, attempt to "fix" the virus or simply format the flash drive and that should kill anything there. You could run the Shredder that is part of Spybot S&D on it after a format to be sure it's clean.

BTW - I Googled "Raila Odinga" and it doesn't come up as any sort of virus or malware, but a Kenyan politician.

First, make sure that you have applied the Autorun/Autoload fix much talked of in recent days, so that nothing attempts to load when you insert the Flash Drive.

Then either format the flash drive, or, if you actually want to keep (some of) what's on there, run a Malwarebytes Anti-malware scan, and/or any other anti-malware scanner in which you have faith. Some AV programs will do a real-time scan of USB Flash Drives immediately upon insertion.

(I suspect Doc Watson thinks your post was just three days early... )

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate the advice (and humour ). I will attempt the procedures listed, but on another PC where if things do go wrong...I can simple "ghost" the PC for a full reformat.

    Cheers all!

You could always try booting from a Linux Live CD, then formatting the flash drive from there.

A small distro can be found here at http://damnsmalllinux.org/
