When you insert a picture (Insert->Picture->From File) you have 3 choices: Insert, Link to File, and Insert and Link. What is the purpose of "Insert and Link"?

Also, when you choose "Link to File", can you specify whether the link is an absolute address or a releative address?

    Thanks, Bob

If you select Link, Word will only store a link to the external picture in your document. If the picture is modified, your document will reflect the changes. If the picture is deleted, Word won't be able to display it any more, so you'll see a placeholder with a red "x" in it.

If you select Insert and Link, Word will store both a link to the external picture and a copy of the picture in the document. If the picture is modified, your document will reflect the changes. If the picture is deleted, Word can fall back on the copy stored in the document, so it will still be able to display the picture.

You can't choose whether a link will be relative or absolute, but our (W)MVP macropod has written a star post that describes how to create relative links: Relative Paths in Word Fields (All)
