How do I instruct Word 2007 to only place the header on the 1st page, only place the footer on page 2 onwards, and place page numbers in the lower -right corner from page 2 onwards. When I do place the page number in the lower-right corner, it erases the footer.

    Thanks.

In the Layout tab of the Page Setup dialog, tick the check box "Different first page". You can now specify different headers and footers for the first page and subsequent pages.

Use the in current position choice. It's the only one that will not overwrite the contents of the footer/header.
