I have two identical PCs running Windows XP Home. They are networked. On one PC there are two problems. Firstly, I cannot do a Live Update for Spyware Doctor unless I reboot and start in Safe Mode with Networking. Secondly, if I log onto http://www.poetryfoundation.org/jour...tem.html?id=19 the Video link does not display properly, but only shows a little icon with a triangle, a square and a circle and the video will not run. On my other PC Spyware Doctor updates normally and the Poetry Foundation video link works perfectly. Can anyone advise what setting has been changed on my troublesome PC and how to get it to behave normally?

I don't know about Spyware Doctor, but the video issue might have somethng to do with a Flash Player update. I was having the same problem with some online videos until I was advised on a recent reboot (something I don't do often) that the Flash Player needed to be updated. After the update, the video problem disappeared.

Do you get an error message?
Is there anything in the application event log?

The errror message says "Update Failed. Error downloading the list of updates. Please try again later." I cannot find anything in the application event log. When I click on it it says the file is corrupt.

Do you have another user account on the "bad" PC that you can logon with and try the update?

You can try the procedure listed in How to Delete Corrupt Event Viewer Log Files to fix the corrupted event log.

No, I do not have another user account. Fixing the corrupt event log involves tampering with the registry which I would rather avoid. So perhaps I will just continue updating in Sfe Mode with networking and view the video on my other PC.

    Thanks for your help.

It is very easy to establish another user account. Just go to Contorl Panel | User Accounts. That way you can logon with the new account. If you can view the video that will tell you your usual logon account is corrupted.
