Left clicking to place the cursor in a text document, several lines of text will highlight. Left clicking in open space either
side of the text will also highlight several lines. Moving the cursor to a different paragraph will highlight several lines in that paragraph, and previous highlighted lines also remain highlighted.

Also, when typing, all the letters are caps without the caps light indicator on.

Somehow I've turned some switches on or off, and don't know how to correct the problem.

Pulling up an older text document and doing the same kind of revisions/additions does not present the problems outlined
    above.

    Thank for you help.

If you check Format>Font, you will see one of the options is All Caps. Is that turned on for the text you're typing?

In addition to Jefferson's reply, you can turn Extend mode on and off by double-clicking on EXT in the status bar. Pressing F8 turns on Extend mode.
