A friend gets an email newsletter from her Athletic Club and the letter shows up in "gibberish" She forwards the email to me and it is fine - all text is in english as it should be on my system.

At the top of the email on the blue title line, it shows UNICODE (UTF-8). I had her change the encoding to Western European ISO but it did not change anything.

I am going to attach a picture of the "gibberish" that shows up in her email and will paste below what shows up on my system. Here is what shows up on my system.

I love what I do! Helping people look and feel healthy, become stronger and live longer, what could be better? I also love talking and writing about what I do. In the next few newsletters I will be sharing some of the knowledge of fitness I've gained in 25 plus years of study and practice. I will be writing on several fitness topics which are important to anyone who wishes to live a healthy lifestyle. I am also interested in answering your specific questions. If there is any particular topic you would like to see in an upcoming newsletter please drop me a line by replying to this newsletter and I would be happy to include it in a future addition.

This is the second monthly newsletter that this has happened for her. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

The "gibberish" consists of Greek characters. Has your friend set Greek anywhere in her Regional and Language settings?

The Greek characters is part of the UNICODE symbols. It has latin and several other foreign language symbols. I found this out by doing a search in Wikpedia.

That's correct. A font such as Arial Unicode MS also contains the character sets for Middle Eastern, South Asian and East Asian languages. But that doesn't mean that English text will be displayed in Arabic or Japanese characters...
