    Hyperlinking index entries (Word 2000)

I would like to hyperlink the entries generated in the index so that a person could click on the index entry and have WORD take them to the appropriate page in the document. Furthermore, I would like this function to carry over when I print this document to PDF.

Or would it be simpler to ask for world peace and full knowledge of what women really want????

I'd have to play with the index hyperlinks in Word as I haven't had to create an index in quite a long time... especially with Word2000.

Hyperlinking the Index in a PDF requires the use of the linking tool. We do that here for out Table of Contents. We not only create bookmarks but also link the TOC with the document so that if someone clicks on a page in the TOC they are taken to that page.

Check out Customizing PDF Navigation/Working With Links in the help file (at least that's where it is in distiller 4.0) It's all done manually and a pain in the <img src=/S/moon.gif border=0 alt=moon width=15 height=15> but once you get the hang of it it's not so bad... although with an big index it could be a killer! <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>
    Hope that Helps
    have fun

I don't know that it is that close to impossible, but easy it isn't.

I would recommend reading Cindy Meister's articles on Word fields. You can find links to them (as well as other resources) at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Fields>Web Resources - Fields</A>. Her third article covers creation of hyperlinked indices, but I think you'll want to read the other two first.

Don't know how this will translate to PDF, though.

I wrote TrailBlazer to do this sort of thing. My downloads web site is down, but I can attach a PKZip file to an email if you so request. cgreaves@vif.com.

Of course you do. So do I. How else am I to lend a hand when my download web site is "down" and the file is 169K zipped?

Gotcha. In that case we'll let you off but don't forget to let us know when your site is back up.

Chris, we frown on email exchanges. If the file is below 100k you could attach it to a message here.
