    A near password-no brainer (Excel 97 SR-2)

How does one protect an entire workbook from being viewed, by anyone who does not have the password?

You'd think that tools/protection/protect workbook would do that simple trick, but it doesn't work on this.

This file is going to be network-based, and it can not be deleted, or even opened without the password.
    TIA

You need file level protection, and to get that you need to click on Options when you have the file save dialog open. In your circumstances you may need to enter a password to Open and to Modify. They can be different, thus allowing some users View Only access and others Modify access.

You may still need to engage sheet level and book level protection, depending on your requirements.

You might need to protect them via the network. If it's WinNT, the administartor can restict access to a folder- for viewing or updating.

I'm not sure about earlier versions.

As I am a network admin I agee that they can protect this file for you in a variety of ways, by restricting who can view, open or even see what files are there. An ounce of prevention...
