A neighbor is having an issue that I can't seem to resolve and I'm pretty sure it has to do with Shockwave and IE7. She is a Quilter and a friend sent her a link to a page with images of the winning quilts in a recent contest. She cannot see the images on the site when she clicks on the link on the page. I cam home and fooled around with the site and it seems to be using Shockwave to render images located on seperate pages on the site as an ovelay to the pages that the links are on.

Here's the page http://www.americanquilter.com/shows_conte...ilt_winners.php and any of the examples linked to are where she is having problems. She gets the shockwave overlay, but the picture of the quilt does not show up. I thought it was a setting in IE, but couldn't find one. Tried to DL & install the latest version of Java and Shockwave (plugin too) no joy either way. Java was up to date and the newer version of Shockwave made no difference.

What am I missing here ???

That looks a lot like the Lightbox 2.0 JavaScript-based photo viewer, but of course there are many others like it. It doesn't actually require any plugins at all, just the JavaScript built into the browser.

Does she have a security suite that blocks referring page information (HTTP_REFERER)? If the images are stored in a folder that has "hotlink protection," the server might not send them if the referring page is blocked. For Norton Internet Security, this is part of its "privacy" settings.

I don't know the cause or solution, but I don't think they use Shockwave. The images are displayed using Lightbox.js, which uses JavaScript only (as far as I know).

Thanks to you both. I was just guessing Shockwave from the way the image generation initiated. I didn't see any setting blocking referred content. She is using Avast AV and ZoneAlarm (free) firewall.

I'll have to see that she has the Lightbox 2 software installed. Thanks for the link Jefferson.

Actually, the necessary files are downloaded automatically by the browser, you don't need to install anything.

Maybe clearing the browser cache/temporary internet files would help?

I have already cleared the browser cache/temp internet files. I'll download and install Lightbox on her system after I install Total Uninstall to protect the system.

But I would not be surprised if this system didn't work correctly. I know the shop she bought it from and the fellow is a hack. I worked for him for 1 week about 4 years ago and quit because I didn't like the way he did business and because he was installing pirated software.

I can't be sure her copy of Windows is genuine and she tells me that when she became upset in the store about them not installing Word but some other word processor they "gave her" a copy of Word & Excel for no charge after asking for $150 for each when she ordered the machine (she declined to have them install the programs for that price). They installed a copy of Word 2003 on a machine that is only a year old.

Sorry I wasn't clear. Lightbox installs on the web server and is linked into the site that uses it. It does not install locally.

I don't use IE but if it is like Firefox, have you checked to see if Javascript (not Java) is enabled?

Thanks for the input Paul. Yes, that was one of the first things I checked along with Java itself and Shockwave.

Then I don't know why it isn't working. She tells me that all her friends and fellow quilters can see them and they don't understand what is wrong with her computer.

I've downloaded Lightbox and am going to go over there when she calls next and just install the thing and see what happens.

I suppose I'm either too thick or too stubborn to grasp what you said Jefferson, but after visiting the system today, I realized that this is server-side technology and I couldn't install it on my end with a hammer.

Long story short, I contacted her ISP (Verizon DSL) and let their "tech" remotely check into the problem. After reviewing the problem and clearing all the temp files, cookies and history in IE, installing the latest version of Shockwave and having no success, she installed Firefox and was still unable to view the site properly. Her suggestions were to get paid support from Verizon or contact Microsoft support as she felt it was a problem with the plugins in IE or Windows itself. And they pay these people ????

I'm at a loss and everyone I talk to that is, IMHO knowledgable, has no idea. Closest I've come is that it is a PHP file/redirect link to a .jpg file. I can find the .jpg in my Temporary Internet folder with a strange file name, but I'm getting the file on my screen, so it should be there. I'm lost at this point.

    Any other thoughts ???

Multiple browser symptoms suggest an external barrier...

Can she load an image directly using its URL, for example, http://www.americanquilter.com/images/show...s/water_835.jpg?

The script is displaying the image as a background image on a blank element. If background images are being blocked somehow, then that could explain why the script is not working as expected. Have her try adjusting some ZoneAlarm settings and see whether they make any difference:

    (1) Ad Blocking (Privacy > Main > Ad Blocking) -- unblock ads.

    (2) JavaScript (Privacy > Main > Mobile Code > Custom) -- unblock JavaScript if blocked (it probably isn't).

She had the problem before ZA was installed, so I don't think that's it.

How did you get the web address for that image ?? I was able to do that on my system, by right clicking the image and selecting Properties & copy/pasted the address into the browser. I got three before IE locked up. Haven't been able to get the addresses via that method since. Don't know why.

Have you tried adding the site to her trusted sites?
