Please enlighten me as to what I am doing wrong here.... downloaded this short video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&v=OULo1cWEdvA] & the YouTube downloader from [CNETdownload.com] see below, but Windows 2003 XP will not recognise the FLV file. What else do I need to do to be able to burn it to disc so friends without computers can play it on their DVD players? Thanks dave.[attachment=83625:YouTube_downloader.jpg]

Do you have DVD burning software that will convert .FLV to the native DVD format?

    Hi Dave

You could try downloading the free VLC media player and see whether that plays it.

There's a very clever piece of Javascript which will enable you to save (most) every YouTube video in .MP4 format.
(How else do you think I can get nine different live videos of Heart's "Crazy on You" to download to my PC?!)

Once there I use the exceptionally good VLC Media Player (new version 0.9.9 out at the beginning of April) to play them.

I don't know about the VLC Player, but if you don't mind paying a small fee, you can go to AVS4YOU® Best software and get a LOT of audio and video software that WILL convert the files you're describing. I've used a number of their programs and ONE FEE lets you download all of their stuff.

    From here.....

FLV files in Windows Media Player
The latest versions of Windows Media Player should play Flash FLV files without any problem, but you may need to install a media decoder first. If your version of WMP doesn't work with FLV files, try installing ffdshow.

When you open an FLV file the player may give you a warning message saying that it doesn't recognize the file extension — click OK and play the file anyway.

You might also want to look at http://www.playflv.com/ for a WMP plugin to play/burn FLV file using Media Player.

Thanks gentlemen for all the suggestions, I will explore them all, see if I can get to grips with their potential & achieve my goal. Appreciate all the responses very much, kind regards Dave.

FANTASTIC Doc. I downloaded the one you suggested and bingo, the FLV video icon which was on the desktop instantly changed to the WMV symbol and played immediately. May I suggest to all who read this reply that you take a little time to watch the video I mentioned in my original post and perchance; if ever you feel like moaning about your lot & maybe feel sorry for yourself, you might [like me, after having seen it many times] stop to consider the positive attitude of this amazing guy who - despite his condition- achieves so many things with a smile on his face. Thanks again Dave.

    Glad it worked out Dave.

Thanks for posting back. I'm guessing that you just downloaded the codec and didn't bother with PlaFLV plugin.

Hi again Doc.... you will be well aware by now that I am from the back side of the galaxy and have very dim vision when it comes to things like Codec, plug-ins etc. All I know is I clicked on the link you gave and then the download tab. [see below]
I assumed - because the downloaded You Tube FLV clip which is on the desktop- instantly change to a WMV format and played the instant I clicked on it, that was all I needed!
    * Rather than you thanking me for posting back the pleasure is rather mine as I am just so pleased to have access to such readily available advice, all credit to this forum, the MVP's and all those others who [thought maybe not regarding themselves as experts] chip in occasionally with their comments to illuminate the way ahead for novices like me for whom occasionally the lights go out. Did I download just the codec or plug-in? Don't know Doc but it seems to have done the trick. Thanx again Dave. [attachment=83645:For_Doc_x.jpg]

Dave, please see my edit of the previous post. Every quote from someone has to have a CLOSING quote tag to allow it to appear as a quote. You're evidently deleting it somehow. It should be [ /quote] (I've put a space before the slash so it will show up.)

You got the plugin Dave. But either would have done the trick. The plugin should allow you to view .FLV file in your browser as well.

The reason I thanked you for posting back is that if the poster comes back and tells us the problem was solved and what was done to solve it, it completes the thread and enables someone else to find both the problem and the solution in the same thread.

    So Thanks.

Thanks all, I think I'm getting the hang of this issue of downloading videos from You Tube & doctoring them so they wil play in a DVD player. Seems to me the guys who thought up all these formats could not have made them more complex if they had tried. Regarding Al's comment about quotes, I found more than once that when clicking the "Add Reply" tab, a message has popped up to say there was an incorrect number of them so I deleted the last one in the previous post which seemed to do the trick allowing the reply to be sent!!!!!! Will fathom this new lounge format out eventually..... Cheers Dave.
