2007: Does 2007 update links from an unopend file? That is, if I have a file that is open, will it automatically update any links that the file may have to an unopened file?
    Thanks.

It depends on the following settings:
    - "Update links to other documents" in the Advanced section of Excel Options.
    - "Startup prompt" in the Edit Links dialog (from the Connections group of the Data tab of the ribbon).
    - "External content" in the Trust Center Settings in Excel Options.

If everything is set correctly, links to unopened files will be updated automatically.

Sigh - why didn't you ask that in the first place?

Select Edit | Links..., click "Startup Prompt..."

Also, select Tools | Options..., activate the Edit tab and look at the "Ask to update automatic links" check box.

I had both of those checked, and after the screen goes blank (presumably "updating"), I get the error message #VALUE where each of the links are!

    This is the formula:

    =SUMIF('[Unopened File]Sheet1'!$D$1:$D$1000,D16,'[Unopened File]Sheet1'!$I$1:$I$1000)*IF(ISERROR(MATCH(D16,'[Unopened File]Sheet1'!$D$1:$D$1000,0)),0,IF(INDEX('[Unopened File]Sheet1'!$G$1:$G$1000,MATCH(D16,'[Unopened File]Sheet1'!$D$1:$D$1000,0))="R",1,-1))

Your formula contains a SUMIF. According to Microsoft this is "by design". That link mentions how you can use a combination of SUM and IF to work with close files
