About a year ago I bought this HP laptop. It came with Vista Home Edition. I had problems with compatibility with old apps; so I formatted the HD and installed WinXP-Pro and brought it up to SP3. I believe the os to be up to date.

Recently I got a DVD-003 disk that I wanted to watch. When I put it in the drive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530B [CD-ROM drive]) I got a message saying that there was no decoder installed. After scratching my head for awhile and googling, I learned that the reinstall of the os probably wasted the MPEG-2 decoder (is that the same as a CODEC?). I read some recovery techniques that might have worked if I had all the WinXP-Pro proprietary install discs, but the proprietary installation CDs I have are for Vista.

After reading some more 'stuff' on the 'Net, I concluded that would have to purchase decoder software for MPEG-2, install it and all would be well. Sooooooooooo . . . I purchased the Nvidia Pure Video Gold (NVIDIA_PureVideo_Decoder_Retail_1.02-223.exe) package and installed it.

After installation Windows Media Player no longer showed a missing decoder message but it does not play the DVD either. I can see the table of contents but nothing displays. I get a message that says: "The currently playing item cannot be automatically recognized. To search for information about this item, click Find Album Information."

Of course, there is no such link displayed.

I came to the lounge and looked around for information about DVD's not playing in WinXP and got thoroughly confused.

Can someone point me to a definitive diagnostic how-to?

    TIA

You might also try using a third party player. Take a look here for some FREE options.

    Thanks for the pointers, Doc!

The Nvidia Pure Video is third party software that is supposed to work with WMP as the decoder. Do you have another media player that you would recommend?

I don't generally watch DVDs on my PC, so I really can't recommend anything from personal experience. When I do play a DVD I use the Cyberlink Power DVD player that came pre-installed on my system.
