The second leg of the USA Triple Crown series is about to start in Maryland. I'm pulling for Mine That Bird only because I'd like to see another triple crown contender.

But, the "girl" against the boys (Rachel Alexandra) is the ods on favorite.

I knew when she went around the first turn that this "girl" was gonna leave the boys in her dust.

Another year without a Triple Crown winner. Mine That Bird did what he usually does, coming from last to second but he just couldn't overtake the filly.

Would you have known what I was on about if I had talked about Cheese Rolling, without any further explanation?
It is world famous in the Cooper's Hill area of Gloucestershire...

Aw c'mon, you know in your heart I was "leg pulling" don't you? . . .

Of course I wouldn't have known (and FREQUENTLY don't) here in the Lounge when someone calls out something familiar in his nation or culture. Sometimes I blush and come right out and ask, as did you, and others I resort to the "big G"...

    Sorry, no offence intended.

Edited much later: I found MY most recent example of embarrassment in here.

In case there's anyone who didn't see the race and would like to, NBC television has some video here. I like the overhead camera because it lets you see how Mine That Bird made his move to second place.

Filly gives racing what it desperately needed

It was a fun race to watch and it was fun to see the filly see the other horse owners back a bit.

I really think the outcome would have been different if Calvin Borel had ridden Mine that Bird instead of Mike Smith. Mine That Bird is a 'railer'. To take advantage of that you need a rider that isn't afraid of riding the rail. Mike Smith took Mine That Bird outside instead of taking the rail. considering how close it was at the end taking that inner route may have been enough to take the lead at the end. Of course we will never know.

According to the sports writers, 85 years ago!

When I watched the overhead video after the race, I thought to myself (I watched it alone at home) if that race had been another 100 years long, Mine That Bird might have beaten that filly.

With the upcoming Belmont at 1 miles, we may be treated to another great competition!

YEP, I believe it will be a "fun run".

Mine That Bird just might catch her!

Considering where you live, you might enjoy this article about Borel's early days. Maryjean Wall is a long-time equine sports writer, retired from the newspaper scene.
