I want to type, by hand (I'm funny that way) or paste from a document, a list whose items are prefaced with parenthesised letters
    (a) like this
    ( and this
    and this

Is there a way, preferably personal settings, to stop conversion to smilies, copyright symbols and the like?
I'd really rather decide myself if I want to insert a smiley.
    I'm too scared to add
    (d) this.
I can't see anything obvious in "Board Settings"

No, there is no setting to prevent conversion to smileys.

Parenthesized letters hardly seem essential to the functioning of the Lounge. You can use <a> [b] <c> etc., or a. b. c. etc.
Or use one of the list options provided by the Lounge - see the and buttons and BB Code

You also can disrupt the tag conversion by inserting other tag pairs, such as [b] and [/b] around the letter inside the parentheses. The toolbar button and Ctrl+B shortcut make this less painful than you might expect -- (b) -- and it comes in handy for talking about BBCode tags such as [code].
