I understand what is "supposed" to happen in auto-formatting. How come I see it some places in a document, but regular dashes in other places?

I looked in the Help, and it said a space and a dash (or two dashes) would produce an en dash, but it doesn't seem to do so all the time.

Why would this not always work?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    In the first place:
    - Click the Office button
    - Select Word Options
    - Select Proofing
    - Click AutoCorrect Options...
    - Activate the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
    - Make sure that the check box "Hyphens (--) with dash()" is ticked.

Keep in mind that if you type a space, a hyphen and a space, the hyphen will not be converted to an n-dash immediately. This will only happen when you type a space (or other delimiter) after the next word. If you happen to click elsewhere in the document before you type a space after the next word, the hyphen will not be converted, even if you go back and type the space after all!
