First question: I had a problem installing McAfee on a user's laptop. McAfee support blamed IE 8 and told me to uninstall it which I did. I subsequently figured out the problem and it wasn't IE 8 at all. Meanwhile, I read in the last Windows Secrets email newsletter that there's some trickiness to installing and uninstalling IE 8. This laptop has Windows XP Pro SP3 on it. The article said I would have to uninstall SP3 first before uninstalling IE 8. I didn't konw that so I uninstalled IE 8 but not SP3. It seems to have revered back to IE 7 just fine. Do I need to reinstall SP3 to make sure none of it was removed when I uninstalled IE 8?

Second question: I'm going to be encountering this again later in the week with a different computer that needs IE 8 removed. How vital is it that I uninstall SP3 first?

This problem occurs only if Windows XP SP3 was installed *after* Internet Explorer 8. If Internet Explorer 8 was installed after SP3, you should have no problem uninstalling it.

I uninstalled IE8 yesterday and had no problem with that portion.
However, IE7 then kept displaying the splash screen (customize your settings)
every time IE7 was opened. It wouldn't go away.

The solution was a registry modification shown here...

I made the changes manually. Maybe this will help someone else.
