    Try using a hard or non-breaking space. I find they are easier to format than regular spaces. You can insert the non-breaking space using Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar.

    In Word 2003, if I select a space and then click the Highlight tool nothing happens. I acheived this effect by highlighting two words and the space between, and then clearing the highlight from the words.

    I've been following this thread Stuart, and I tried your method in Word 2007. Works perfectly for me.

    What you can also do is select the space and then click the shading icon (part of the paragraph group on the home tab). Be sure a color is selected.
