Capitalization "Bug" in Word 2000? (Word 2000/SR1)

The word "mid" will not cap at the beginning of a sentence. I have Cap first word turned on, I've checked Exceptions and AutoCorrect for this word. I've also checked the Knowledge Base and can't find anything on this. To make matters worse, if "mid" is the first word in a new document, no sentence caps the first Word after that. A friend with Word 97 says the same thing happens to her. I'm left with pressing Shift + F3 to cap this word (when I remember).

Am I overlooking a fix for this or is it truly a bug? Thanks.

Seems to me that mid is not a word, it's a prefix.

Mid can stand alone, however, even if you add a hyphen and another word, it does not cap. "Pre" is also a prefix and does cap alone.

    Hi Cheri:

I get the same result with Word 2000 as you do (mid won't autocorrect to Mid). But I don't find that other sentences will not cap. When you start a new sentence or paragraph, the old one must end with ending punctuation, however. This is different than the behavior of other sentences.

    If you type:
    mid year
now is the time (now will not be capitalized)
now is the time. (now will not be capitalized)
now is the time. (now will be capitalized, because the line before ending with a period).

    I haven't been able to find an explanation for it yet either. <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

    Hi Cheri,

I've simply found this option to be unreliable. There are several words that Word will not capitalize when starting a sentence. I think part of it depends on the situation and proper sentence structure.

The only thing I found to be reliable is the work around described in this article:

Not a problem if you simply type Mid yourself rather than expect AutoCorrect to capitalize mid for you.

Seems like a quick fix to me.

    FWIW

I'm wondering if somehow Word is internally getting confused with the mid function.

Yes, but zzz is not a word, and it capitalizes.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll just have to remember to manually cap this specific word with Shift + F3.

Huh?! Can't you just hold down the shift key as you type the m so it comes out as M?! Why do you need to go back to do it?

To clarify: If I forget to use the Shift key, I still have the Shift + F3 option available to me.

    Hi Cheri:

Also, when you're entire document is finished, you can always go back & use Find/Replace all with:
    Find: . mid
    Replace: . Mid

Or you can record a macro that will do it for periods, question marks, & exclamation points.
