    Hi,

I just recently got a Dell Inspiron Laptop and the keyboard on the thing was driving me nuts (my fingers are used to a bigger keyboard), and so I got an external one. What I would like to do is be able to disable the laptop keyboard when the external one is plugged (the cats have already started messing with the laptop keyboard and it is competing with me trying to use the external one). I have searched the control panel to see if it was possible and looked in Vista Help and no help there either. Is there a way to disable the laptop keyboard when the external one is plugged in?

    Thanks,
    Chris

If there is no option in the Keyboard section of Control Panel or the option is greyed out, then that laptop may not offer the option. The only software way around that is to go into the bios and disable the keyboard there. But that also, is not always possible.

And put the cats out for awhile.

Thanks. I don't think I want to go into the BIOS to disable the keyboard since I am likely to accidently disable other things as well. I guess an option if the cats are too irritating is to disable the sleep mode when the lid is closed and then normally use the external monitor, keyboard, and mouse when the laptop lid is shut. But that defeats the purpose of having a laptop. Oh well.

Using any external, human interface device defeats the purpose of a laptop. I don't use them unless I have no choice. I hate the touchpad interface to the point of distraction and I'v used an ergonomic keyboard since they first came out and am not at all comfortable on a standard keyboard, let alone any laptop keypad. The best answer here seems to be to use the laptop keypad for awhilw, and you should get used to it. Although a call or email to Dell support, could probably tell you if there is a simple way to do what you want here. Please post back if you find one.

Cover the laptop keyboard with a thin piece of cardboard, tape in place it needed.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I am trying to think of something to try but I just can't work it out yet
I love cats, but I can not eat a whole one.
