My Documents icon gone

On some of my systems, the My Documents system icon on the Desktop has disappeared for no apparent reason. So far I have not been able to restore it. While I can always create a shortcut to the local My Documents folder, the computers are all networked, and I want My Documents to point to the respective user's network folder. This is only possible with the system My Documents icon/shortcut. This icon points by default to the physical My Documents folder, but I always redirect it to the user's own home folder on the network, which automatically sets their document directories in Word, Excel, etc. to this folder.

But on two of these systems, the My Documents system icon has disappeared, and I have not been able to restore them. All machines run Windows 98 SE and are attached to a vanilla NT network.

Any help and/or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Start | Documents | My Documents
and get the My Documents folder open, then
File | New
and at the bottom of the list should be the option
'My Documents Folder on Desktop'

Hi. I have the same problem on Windows Me. Your solution doesn't appear to help. I do everything you say, but the option "My Documents Folder on Desktop" that you mention isn't there when I select File | New.

Here's my answer:

In Windows Explorer's LH pane (the tree view) I can highlight the drive c: thus showing all its folders in the RH pane. Then I drag "My Documents" in the RH pane to the very top of the tree in the LH pane -- to the icon labelled Desktop. This results in an error message saying, in effect, that I can't drag it there, but do I want the desktop icon instead. Say 'yes' and the icon appears. Sometimes it lasts a few minutes on my desktop, sometimes a few hours. Eventually it always vanishes again.

Life is weird enough, without Bill Gates' contributions.

WINDOWS 98 - STAND-ALONE ONE-PERSON USER

This is LONG, but please bear with me ...

I am at a total loss. I find threads that seem to SPECIFICALLY address my problem, but either
(a) there's one tiny thing different, or
( the answers do not help.

First, I'd like to explain the problems, and (if you can hang in there with me that long), I'll specifically explain why the two suggestions in this thread (from Leif on 09/08/01 and johnvansomeren on 10/06/01) do not work. I've also tried suggestions from other newsgroups, followed MS KnowledgeBase help on "Restoring Lost My Documents Desktop Icon," but it's something alien, believe me.

FIRST, THE PROBLEMS:
(1) The "My Documents" icon disappeared from the Desktop
(2) Creating a "shortcut" icon from C:My Documents" to the desktop does put a yellow folder there, but it's not like the MS icon which is 'docked' along the left side of the desktop (along w/ "My Computer," "Network N'hood," etc.). It appears alphabetically along w/ the other programs and folders (right after "Music Match Jukebox" and before "Norton AntiVirus") ... AND EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP...
(3) The "My Documents" folder DOES NOT APPEAR in the "Look in:" (Browse) window in ANY program, either
(a) under "Desktop" (even after I've made a shortcut, and I can see the shortcut folder clearly sitting right on my desktop), or
( under "C: "(even though in Explorer, it's clearly there in the C: directory, right after "C:LEXMARK" and right before "C:MY PAGE MANAGER");
(4) Windows Explorer does NOT show the "My Documents" folder under DESKTOP, even though I just created the skanky, un-docked, plain-yellow 'shortcut' folder pointing to "C:My Documents"

(PLUS, I have a SNAG-IT screen capture of EVERY instance above, if you don't believe me!)

In other words ... "My Documents" is completely inaccessible via "Look in:" (Browse), regardless of what program I'm running. If I am in WORD, for instance, and I want to open a file:

(a) if I "Look in: C:," there is no "My Documents" folder ... it goes from LEXMARK to MY PAGE MANAGER;
( if I "Look in: Desktop," there is no "My Documents" folder there either! All other "built-in" MS folders appear ("My Computer," "Network Neighborhood," "My Briefcase," etc.), as well as other folders that I have created and placed on my desktop (i.e., "Games," "Text Editors").

Yes, I have the PLACE BAR (in fact, I use Woody's WOPR PlaceBar Customizer) and YES, I can get to "My Documents" by clicking on the "My Documents" icon residing there, but what happens when I'm in a program where the PlaceBar is non-existent (i.e., "Microsoft Photo Editor," "Wilbur," etc.)??? Trying to run Wilbur the other day about made me ... well, it's probably better not to go there.) If "My Documents" doesn't appear in the "Look in:" window by default, and the PlaceBar is not available, I have no choice but to SAVE the file to a folder that DOES appear (i.e., DESKTOP), and then through Windows Explorer, drag it over to "C:My Documents."

Likewise, if I want to OPEN a file from a program that doesn't have a PlaceBar, I have to go into Explorer and open the document from there!

HINT (for those of you who have followed me this far): In Explorer/View/Folder Options.../File Types , both FOLDER and FILE FOLDER icons are grayed out. I think I messed something up when I was trying to change the program used to open .jpg files.

I've checked everything; rebuilt the registry, performed DOS [scanreg /opt /fix], performed "Detect and Repair...," etc. but NOTHING works!

NOW FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE CARED ENOUGH ABOUT THIS POOR, PITIFUL WOMAN WHO ... oh, never mind ...

Re: My Documents icon gone

Try entering the following at the Start -- Run prompt:

<pre>rundll32 mydocs.dll,RestoreMyDocsFolder</pre>

That should restore the folder to its rightful place in Explorer.

Re: My Documents icon gone

Mark:

Thanks for your response, but absolutely nothing changed. I copied the line and pasted it to Start/Run, so no errors there.

The correct line is

rundll32 mydocs.dll,RestoreMyDocsFolder

with a space after "32" and no other spaces, commas, periods, etc. ... right?

After pressing START, the "timer" showed for about one nano-second, but the MyDocs is still missing --- it's still not appearing in Look in: under either "Desktop" or "C:" (though it is, in fact, in C.

I re-booted --- still no change. It's a real bugaboo, and I do very much appreciate your help. Any other suggestions?

BTW: Wanting something to do today other than focus ("obsess") on this Missing folder problem, I moved the sub-directory where I keep my DailyWordTips, thereby changing its path from:

C:My DocumentsComputerMicrosoftDWT
to
C:My DocumentsComputerMicrosoftWordDWT

I use the WOPR Place Bar Customizer ... I think the greatest computer tool known to man ... and, of course, my Favorites Button No. 7 (DWT) no longer directed me properly. And, since the "My Documents" folder won't appear in any "Look in:" window [either under C: or Desktop], it was impossible to re-direct Key #7 to the new directory via the PBC screen.

HOWEVER ... I was EXTREMELY proud of myself (and I do realize how dangerous it is to change the Registry, but I don't want to live w/o the WOPR PBC) ...

I searched for "DWT" in the Registry Editor, and changed the path to DWT in the appropriate locations, and ALAS! ... Woody's PBC is again working like a charm!!

Thanks so much for your help!

Re: My Documents icon gone

The syntax is correct, as you entered it. But still it does not show up, eh? Now that is a bugaboo. If you have not done so already, run a full, thorough scandisk, including a surface scan, just to eliminate driver errors. I doubt that has much to do with the missing icon but you never know.

There is another command that you can run, similar to the above, which is intended to repair My Documents. Try entering this, and see if it restores the folder:

<pre>regsvr32 /i mydocs.dll</pre>

Failing that, I would be sorely tempted to run the Windows 98 System File Checker, and as a last resort re-run Windows setup. Re-running setup doesn't destroy anything, and usually fixes default settings that are missing - i.e. My Documents. Of course it also likes to throw in the Online Service folder that I love to hate and a few other things but the functionality of My Documents may make it worthwhile.

I agree with you on the Placebar Customizer, I think it's an excellent tool. You might be interested in the rest of the WOPR tools as well, they are an excellent addition to Office if you spend much time working with it.

Mark:

Well, thanks again! I entered:

regsvr32 /i mydocs.dll

and at least this time, it 'ran' but returned the following error:

DllInstall in mydocs.dll failed.
Return code was: 0x80070057

I ran System Checker, and it returned the following (remember that this morning I moved some Word .docs around in Explorer):

I certainly don't remember doing anything at 7:35 this morning, although it could have been when I was into the Registry changing the 'path' to DWT as I explained earlier?

I chose "Ignore" with all results; that option said that the next time I ran the System Checker, I would again be reminded of these changes and corrupted files.

I will await your response as to whether I should restore, ignore, or what.

BTW: I have been received recurring msgs in Outlook that NXPEXT32.DLL is missing. Despite "reinstalling" it from the CD, and running "Detect & Repair" to recover it as per MS instructions, it still continues to get 'lost.' ... Not EVERY time I use Outlook, but more than it should. This problem just started a few days ago, long after the "Missing My Documents" problem first reared its ugly head.

Thanks again. I appreciate the time you're spending on helping me.

Re: My Documents icon gone

UNBELIEVABLE, but my problem is corrected! I'm still in a state of shock.

A suggestion came to me to install TweakUI from Microsoft; and [although the download directions given by MS didn't really work, but that could have been due to my machine], I figured it out ... and without doing a single thing other than installing that program, everything good and holy happened:

(1) "My Documents" re-appeared on my desktop;
(2) It was the regular MS icon that comes with Windows ... a yellow folder, open, revealing papers;
(3) It was 'docked' along the left-side of the desktop, right along w/ the other Windows immovable icons (My Computer, Network Neighborhood, Internet Explorer);
(4) "My Documents" now appears in EVERY "Look in:" window in every program ... both under "C:" and under "Desktop" ... from which it had totally disappeared before; and
(5) Control Panel now contains a TweakUI icon with innumerable options (such as allowing YOU, the user, to decide what icon you want to appear first on your desktop) ... none of which I'll even mess with, now that I have found "My Documents" again!

I'm still in a state of shock, because everything looks so good, and I pretty much did NOTHING but download a program (and spend about 267 hours of my time and yours trying to figure it out before that).

So, everything is beautiful. Life is good. White Russians are tasty.

Re: My Documents icon gone

Most excellent! Who'd have thunk that an unsupported utility from Microsoft would fix a core problem in the operating system? <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

In all seriousness, though, based on what you posted earlier with the corrupt files discovered by the System File Checker, I think it would be a good idea to run scandisk and let SFC repair all the corrupt files that it finds. It sounds as though your hard drive has some errors on it - making scandisk and defrag part of your regular maintenance is good PC Health practice.

This is a bit late but take a look at this site and some registry tweak to enable and disable My Document Icon both in Win95/98 & Win2k/XP flavor. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/962/>http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/962/</A>

and here is another tweak <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/pcforrest/reg_hacks.htm#mydocs>http://www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/pcfo...acks.htm#mydocs</A>

Something to look back to in case it happened again
