I have two tables, a reference table with 4000 records and a variable called companyname and another table called table1 with a variable called compname. I want to look in the reference table and find a companyname the corresponds closely with the compname. I thought of a query what extracts the first 20 characters in each company name and tried to joint on that.

You could use the Soundex algorithm to create a code that represents the phonetic equivalent of the company name. See Post 129020.
For tables with many records, I'd add a Soundex field to the table and use an update query to populate it with the Soundex code of the company names. This will speed up matching on Soundex codes.
