    Charts (2000 SR1)

My spreadsheet shows sales to date and projected over the next few months. Each subject is then transferred to a chart for graphical impact. The chart shows past and future info.

Is there a way to place a vertical line on the chart to show todays date?

    Thanks, Simon

I don't know if that's possible- I'm not an expert by any means.

Would it help if, for instance, it were a bar chart, with past bars showing in one colour and future in another?

There are several possibilities to do that, but it depends on the type of chart. In case of an XY-scatter chart, you can just use 4 cells on the spreadsheet for the (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) coordinates. In case of a vertical line, x1 = x2. Choose y1 equal to the minimal value and y2 equal to the maximum. Then select the 4 cells, copy them, select the chart and go to paste special. Check, new series and categories in first column (or row depending on how you presented your data in the cells). Then click OK and two new points will be added to the chart. As they are a independent new series you can format them for a line, no symbols.
Of course you can always use the drawing toolbar and just draw a vertical line on your chart where you want.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Charts (2000 SR1)

    I have a suggestion:
I imagine your source data are displayed in this way
    First row, titles of columns

    First column: the date
Second column: the volume of sales
Give to this second column the name "sales"
    Select all this column
    Insert/Define/Name sales
Type in the third column cell C2 the formula
    =IF(A2=TODAY(),MAX(Sales),0)
    Fill down

All the cells of this column are displaying the value 0
except the one in today's row.
This one shows the greatest value of your sales column

Let's chart using the three columns till the wanted row as data source
    Chart Wizard/custom type/column area

The sales volume are displayed as area
This area is vertically crossed by a single column, at today's date.

    To narrow the column,
    Select the serie,
    format data series
Put the gap width at maximum

    Does this fit your requirement?
