    Numbering Table Columns (word 2000)

I have Word 2000 and would like to create a 2-column table with around
    50 rows.

I want to have the left hand column number as follows :-

    1A
    1B
    1C
    2A
    2B
    2C
    3A
    3B
    3C
    .......etc

    50A
    50B
    50C

Can anyone suggest how this can be done automatically without
labouriously printing each line out , please?

Re: Numbering Table Columns (word 2000)

    Hi Bill,

The easiest way I can think of is to use Excel.

    * Starting In cell A1 type:
    1
    1
    1
    1

    * In the next cell, A5, add this formula: =A1+1
    * Copy this formula to however many cells you need. (If using 4 groups 50 times, that would be 200 cells) To easily copy use the Fill Handle. This is the node on the bottom right corner of the cell pointer. When the mouse pointer changes to a cross hair, drag/copy as needed.
    * Starting in cell B1 type:
    A
    B
    C
    D

    * Select all four cells, place your mouse in the Fill Handle and double-click to fill the series down the column
    * In cell C1 add this formula: =A1&B1
    * Fill it down the column by double-clicking the Fill Handle as before.
    * Press <Shift Right Arrow> to select the next column to the right
    * Copy and Paste into Word

Re: Numbering Table Columns (word 2000)

    Thanks very much BAM.

I've obtained a table in Excel using your method in which the left-hand column is numbered as I stated previously. The only problem I now have is that , when I copy this into Word , although the gridlines show on the PC , they do not print. I seem to remember from a problen I had some months ago that the way to get these gridlines to print out is using "BORDERS " ?

Can you help with this, please ?

Re: Numbering Table Columns (word 2000)

    Hi Bill,

When you paste it into Word it becomes a Word table. To print the gridlines, yes you do need to format the borders. The easiest way to do this is select the table and go to Table/Table AutoFormat. Select Grid 1 to add a 3/4 pt black border to all gridlines.

Also note you may want to turn off "AutoFit" to retain the size of your columns.
