changes in copied Normal.dot (Word 2003)

I have a normal.dot on a shared network drive that I use to replace users' normal.dot when they get corrupted.
Here is something new. I copied the normal to the appropriate directory on the users computer and some of the settings wheren't in the normal when the user opened Word- specifically, reading layout was checked and drawing canvas was turned on. I opened the dot on the network drive and they were not turned on.
Extra wierdness -- on some computers the normal copies, well, normally. On others, the settings are different.
All are running Office 2003 SP-3.
Any suggestions?

Settings such as whether or not to use the Drawing canvas aren't stored in Normal.dot but in the user's registry, so Normal.dot doesn't influence those settings.

If you have templates with identical names in both the workgroup location and on the user's template location, Word will always default to the version on the user's pc.
