I've been keeping records in Excel for the past several years. I love it.

But. I'm starting to get request from clients, that want more and more sophisticated reports.

Is Access better at performing this?

I know very little, let's just cal it nothing, about Access.

    ..Or stay with Excel ?

What's my advantage of going with Access?

It depends on what kind of reports your clients want.

Access is good at grouping and summarizing data, and at "free-form" reports.

Access can handle much larger datasets than Excel (in particular Excel 2003 and before).

On the other hand, although Access has pivot tables and charts, they are harder to use than those in Excel.

    Thanks, I'm wrestling with this.

    If I may ask.

If I want to start a new database from existing Excel data....

Any advice on how to set up, what to avoid etc. would be appreciated.

My data is already in Table format with headers.

You can create a blank new database in Access.

I recommend using Access 2000 format, even if you have Access 2002, 2003 or 2007 yourself. All recent versions of Access can work with the Access 2000 format without conversion.

You can import Excel tables into Access (File | Get External Data | Import...)

See the section "Some general tips" in Post 552985 for some recommendations. You'll find more tips in SteveH's attachment to Post 669075.
