O2K install (O2K)

Could anyone tell me the steps I should take in migrating from O97 SR2 to O2K ?
I gather I should go to O2K SR1a from reading previous postings, are there other tips I should follow?
Thanks,
Alex McM

There isn't any need to uninstall Office 97. I have successfully upgraded a number of machines without any problems and without deleting any files ahead of time. The only thing to watch out for is if you want to keep any of the Office 97 applications. In that case, I'd suggest uninstalling Office 97 and reinstalling the apps you want to keep in a different folder, installing Office 2000 in the default location. If you aren't going to keep any of the 97 apps for a while, then you can just install over them.

Re: O2K install (O2K)

My company migrated from Office 97 to 2000 last December, and my memory may be a bit hazy on the topic. I do remember that Microsoft recommends deleting the Normal.dot file before upgrading. Failing to delete the file can cause Word to become unstable or something like that. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you uninstall Office 97 because running both Office 97 & 2000 on the same box can cause other headaches (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=off&Number=47454&page=&view =&sb=&o=&vc=1>see this thread).

I hope this helps!

Whoops! I meant to say, make sure you remove Office 97 during the Office 2000 install. Thanks for pointing that out, Charlotte. I should double check what I've written before I post!

Re: O2K install (O2K)

Even that isn't really necessary, especially if you want to keep both versions for a while. However, installing Office 2K in a non-default location makes it difficult to use some of the samples because they expect everything to be in the default Office folder.

If you *do* install Office 2K in another location, then you need to remember to either create Send To shortcuts for the different versions of the applications or remember to start the specific version and open a file from there because when you double click a document, it will attempt to open it with the last version of the application you ran, whether that's the correct one or not. I retained Access 97 on my machine when I installed Office 2K (in a non-default location, which is how I know about the samples) and haven't had any problems.
