Mail Merge Headache, Portrait becomes Landscape (Word 97 SR2)

I have a mail merge document, 3 pages. If Field11=Yes, I'd like it to print a landscape page, then a portrait page. The 3rd page is also protrait and prints every time. All 3 pages must be set to odd pages in order to print duplex correctly. The very first thing I inserted is the IF statement then inserted the following pages. So the end of the second page is the curly braket for the IF statement.

    First page setup:
    1. File, Page Setup, Layout, Section start set to Odd page, Vertical Alignment set to Top
    2. Paper Size, Landscape
    3. Margins set to 3" all around
After typing the first (landscape) page, I clicked on Insert, Break, Odd Page and starting formatting the second (portrait) page.

    Second page setup:
    1. File, Page Setup, Layout, Section start set to Odd page, Vertical Alignment set to Center
    2. Paper Size, Portrait
    3. Margins set to 1" all around
After typing the second page (portrait) page, I clicked on Insert, Break, Odd Page to begin typing the third (portrait) page.

Now the problem, when I merge, the end result, the second page, which is suppose to be Portrait, becomes landscape. I go back and change the Page Layout on the second page but it's not holding. What am I doing wrong? Please help!!! <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15>

    Thanks,
    --Maria

    P.S. I've attached the file just in case I'm not making it clear <img src=/S/angel.gif border=0 alt=angel width=15 height=21>

    Hi Maria,

I guess I'm having trouble following what you are trying to do. If you insert an Odd section break after page one (which is an odd number) then page 2 will become page 3 and page 2 will be blank.

Then if page 2 is actually page 3, then the next page would be page 4, however there is another Odd section break, so page 4 will be a blank page and your page 3 becomes page 5. So your merged document would be:

    Page 1 - Recipient Address
    Page 2 - Blank
Page 3 - Letter from Agfa
    Page 4 - Blank
Page 5 - Include Text file

I think what you need is a simple next page section break. Now if you are inserting a next page section break and it is changing to Odd on you then you need to obtain the Post Service Release for Word:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/Wd97mcrs.aspx>http://office.microsoft.com/download.../Wd97mcrs.aspx</A>

This corrected several bugs, one of which is "When you enter a next page section break and change the subsequent paper orientation (portrait to landscape or landscape to portrait), the next page section break may turn into an odd page section break"

Hi Bam, nice to see you again.

You're right, first page is landscape, 2nd is blank, 3rd is portrait, 4th is blank, 5th page is INCLUDETEXT. From my understanding, if I need to print the document duplex, I need to start it on an odd page.

I still don't understand why the 3rd page cannot hold any of the settings from Page Setup.

If I remove the IF statement and leave the fields, it works just fine.

    Anyone?

    Thanks

I've been trying to understand your request, and the only thing I can see is that you say:

...So the end of the second page is the curly braket for the IF statement ...

But in the attachment, the end of the IF statement is at the end of page 1?

In this case would page 2 would be page one if the IF isn't Y, and since you've asked for page 1 to be landscape ... am I on the right lines here?

    Hi Beryl:

No, the end of the IF statement is on the 3rd page (which is actually the 2nd page but forced as odd section break) you are probably misreadding the brackets due to the barcode field. All pages are set to be odd so that they print correctly duplex. What I need is:

    If Field11 = Y
Print 1st page, envelope, set to odd section break
Print 3nd page (which is actually the second), letter, set to odd section break

The last page is always printed no matter what Field11 says.

Sounds so simple and should be easy to do. But for a beginner like myself, it is so frustrating <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>
