Word XP Doc won't run from desktop (word XP)

I have a word document, that has a form in it and a macro, that worked fine either as a shortcut from the desktop or from the desktop itself under office 2000. Now under WORD XP I get an error message that word cannot find the file which is not the case or a dynamic library is not available. Works fine if run if word has already loaded and is running or if load word and then run from within word.

Would like to run it from the desktop and have it open word if not already open. Also have to keep macro
security low in order to run it. Can the macro security be reset to low when run the documenet and
then reset to default of medium when close it out???

I can EMAIL you the document.
Thanks

Hi Jerome,

It sounds like Word needs to be re-registered and the File Types recreated. The File Type holds the registered file extension and the actions used when double-clicking a file to open it. If there is a problem with the command that is used an error such as you described will occur.

To re-register Word, go to Start/Run and run the following command:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Tried that. Did NOT work. I think that there is some kind of path problem to all the installed components.

Hi Jerome - I've had a problem like that when moving from one machine or version to another - it was because the new version/different machine stored the files in a slightly different location, and since a shortcut won't automatically update itself it continues looking in the old location and says it can't find it ... might this be happening here?

Shouldn't happen within the program, but *outside* it's a different matter!

What does your File Types mapping look like for .doc? This is what my colleague down the hall has behind the Advanced button for DOC types for XP.

Thanks but this is more complicated. A macro / project is not finding some dlls when run from outside a normal word path directory, Unless word is already running with all its dll's etc. This is something unique to Word XP.

I found it and yes my values are the same. I think it has something to do with the embedded macro / project in the file as when I try to copy it over ie new macros to the normal.dot it won't let me do it.
I can send you the file if you think it would help

I don't have XP myself, and I'd rather not open problematic documents on the office manager's computer. Hopefully you will find a volunteer.

Hi Jefferson,

FWIW, the /r switch (shortcut for regserver) will recreate the File Type data.

I have found it is best to use the /regserver switch in for the Office apps instead of manually modifying it. It seems that occasionally the info in the dialog box will appear correctly, but the problem actually lies in the Registry.

Hi Jerome,

I don't have Word 2002 currently installed either, but perhaps if you attach the file someone will take a look.

Although I should be able to open the file, I may not be able to view the module. Maybe you could copy/paste the code in a text file or in the document?

While they should match, "should" doesn't always get you there in Windows, does it?

Anyway, the /r switch is a heck of a lot easier than these manual edits!!!
