compile error in hidden module (Excel 97 SR2)

I'm getting an error message while using an Excel file - 'compile error in hidden module: module 2'. Trouble is, it happens on some computers but not others... All are running Win 98, Office 97 SR2 and I can't see any difference between the machines that run this file successfully and those that won't.
    Any clues?

    Michael,

Check <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=72870&page=0 &view=expanded&sb=5&o=0#Post72870>this post</A> in the Word forum- it has advice for Excel as well.

Thanks Geoff, but no luck. Nothing in the XLStart folder, no alternate Startup directories in Tools-general. And there's nothing in the Word Startup folder, either (just thought I'd check).
The error doesn't occur on starting Excel. It only occurs while running this particular Excel file.

Trace the error on one of the machines that's erroring out, see why?

    Michael,

Are there any macros in the Worksheet (Tools, Macros, check the list of names)?

Or are there any Add-ins installed (Tools, Add-ins)?

It sounds like the workbook has a hidden module in it, and that module is using a procedure that requires a reference to another workbook or addin. When the error happens, does the error message box contain a Debug button? If it does, does it show you the line of code with the error when you click on it?

This file is protected somehow - no toolbars to see anywhere, shortcut keys don't work... So I can't get int to see macros, add-ins etc. The error message has no debug button, either.

Once you have the workbook open, can you open another file into the same instance of excel? Presumably - from what you've said - you won't be able to do this from that instance itself, but may be able to by double-clicking on it in explorer.

Re: compile error in hidden module (Excel 97 SR2)

I've finally been able to behind the scenes, and it appears that "Microsoft Office 9 Object Library" is being referenced by the offending module, and this is missing from the recalcitrant computers. What is this library, and why is it on some computers and not others?

That is the Office Object Library which contains the Office object modle. Not much will compile without it.

Don't know why it was not turned on on those systems.

Re: compile error in hidden module (Excel 97 SR2)

I may be way off here, but isn't office 9 referring to office 2000? you've labelled this thread excel 97 which is 8 - have you got a mixture of platforms? I know you say all are running office 97 but you've also said that the library is on some machines and not others. Maybe the offending code was written on a machine that was running 2000? Maybe someone has updated some of your machines and not all - this could happen if (I think the example is right) you're running office 97 standard on all machines and then some pesky user asks for access, so you go out and get access 2000 and install that on some of your machines. They would then have office 9 libraries and excel code written on one of those machines would probably refererence the office 9 library before the office 8 library.

    Just a thought.

Brooke, I think you've hit the nail on the head, confirming a sneaking suspicion I had. Office 9 Library sure sounds like Office 2000 to me!
    thanks, appreciate your input.

Re: compile error in hidden module (Excel 97 SR2)

It definitely is xl2000 and you can prove that two ways. One is to display the Excel Help/About dialog and on the top you'll see version 9.0.2812 (on mine anyway). All Excel 2000 is 9.x and Excel 97 is 8.x and Excel XP is 10.x (I don't know what Excel 2002 is). The Help/About dialog in xl97 doesn't show the version number (mine shows SR2).

You can also get the version from VBA with Application.Version. I use this to warn the user that I've only tested my app in xl97 and xl2000 by comparing the version number with "9." or "10."

    <pre>If instr(1, application.version, "10.") = 1 then
    msgbox "this is Excel 2000"
    end if
    </pre>
