    [Word 2002, SP2]

I have an existing Index. Is it possible to add Hyperlinks or another Field to the Index that will take me to that page in the document? Have a feeling this will be too arduous…. Thanks

Unlike the TOC field, the INDEX field does not have a switch that turns the entries into hyperlinks.
If you would turn entries into hyperlinks, the hyperlinks would be removed next time the index is updated, so I think it'd be best to skip this.

Would it be possible – even feasible - to create a macro that would select, say, the first 2 words of each entry in my Index, select a level and then…what? In other words, somehow convert the Index to a TOC??

    Thank you.

Try the following (on a copy of your document):

    - Display hidden text.
    - Replace all instances of " XE " (without the quotes) with " TC " (again, without the quotes).
    - Remove the index.
    - In the old location of the index, select Insert | Reference | Index and Tables...
    - Activate the Table of Contents tab.
    - Click Options...
    - Clear the check boxes for Styles and Outline Levels, and tick the check box for Fields.
    - Click OK.
    - Make sure that the hyperlinks check box is ticked.
    - Click OK.

You'll probably see why it is not such a good idea...

    Hi, Hans -

I tried this on a much shorter Indexed document and it worked FINE. What were you referring to when you suggested it might not be good?

    Thanks!

It depends - if you have marked ALL instances of a word for the index, you'd get multiple entries for that word in the TOC.

I didn't. What you are referring to sounds like a concordance.

I shall attempt your instructions on my long document.

    Thanks yet again.
