    Copy from IE & Paste into Word 2000 (IE5.5)

    Using Win 98SE, 600MH, 128MB ram. I'm curious as to whether everyone has this behavior using IE5.5.

    I've I select & copy a web page with tables & graphics & then paste into Word 2000, the first paste takes inordinately long (about 30-40 seconds). If I'm not connected to the Internet when I try to paste, it connects to the Internet first, before pasting. If I don't allow the connection, the tables & graphics don't paste.

    Thanks in advance.

    At a guess, Word is checking the source because of the the setting in:
    Tools | Internet Options | General
    Temporary Internet Files -> Settings
    Check for newer versions of stored pages . . .
    Attached Images Attached Images

    Also, if there are images, the paste needs to read the link, and you might find that it is now a linked image in the word file and not a embedded image.

    Hi Lief & Dave:

    Thanks for responding. Do you experience the same thing on your computers if you copy a page (say one of the Lounge pages) & then paste into Word? I get a delay at both my home & work computers & each run different operating systems. I tried playing with the settings, but that doesn't change things. I never noticed it before because I was using Netscape to copy & it only copies text.

    Just tried with THIS page and ALL images are linked and all addresses are hot. Also, ZoneAlarm needed to give Word permission to access the internet.

    Netscape may NOT be making links vs. IE use of links. I am using IE 6.0 Beta on a Win2K , and Office 2000 on this machine.

    Hi Dave:

    I take it that you get the same behavior. That means when IE copies a web page, it only copies a link to the graphics. When you actually paste, it downloads the link. This is similar to getting an html ezine. Until the graphics download, you see only placeholders. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    When I check the place holders in the Word options, Yes, I get the place holders otherwise by default I get the images. Also do you have anything blocking Word from using the internet?

    No. Maybe I was unclear. If I'm connected to the Internet or if I allow a connection when I try to paste, then the images are pasted. If I prevent the connection, then only text & placeholders are pasted. Once the images are pasted, though, I don't need Internet access.

    OK, it appears that it will get a fresh copy from the internet and then convert to Word draw image. Hope this helps, since I am on cable (always on) it connects but ZoneAlarm needs permission to allow Word access to the internet.

    Hope this helps.
