They never said that they had actually caught the person, though! (The police could have been equally incompetent, perhaps?!)

I don't have the link but there was a recent TV news story about a guy who used and succeeded in breaking in to a home, using the old credit card trick to slip the door lock.
Problem was, he left his credit card behind and police were able to track him down in no time. Seems he was amazed at the speed it took to find him!

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

Here, the local (possibly apocryphal) tale regards the guy who pinched somebodies credit card, used it to buy a wide-screen television from a local wholesaler and had it DELIVERED to his HOME ADDRESS!!!

In my humble opinion, the best dumb criminal action I ever heard of was a guy who tried to break into a furriers store through one of its display windows.

After he was brought unconscious and under arrest to a local hospital and treated for his minor injuries, he confessed to the authorities his actions that lead to his downfall.

And his story went as follows:

He cased the furriers show window that he assumed was a large plate glass window.

That night he came back to observe the area again and decided that all he needed to do was break the large window, quickly grab as many of the furs he could and escape before any police or security arrived.

Went and got himself a large steel garbage can that was nearby, brought it to the window, flung it at the window assuming it would break the window, but he didn’t know the window was not glass but Plexiglas which caused the steel garbage can to bounce off of the window, come flying back at him with enough force to knock him out cold.

The force of the impact on the window set off the store alarm, the cops show up and found a steel garbage can with its contents strewn all over an unconscious petty criminal lying between two parked cars.

I caught that too BATcher. In fact it states that they released the photo in hopes someone will be able to identify the individual. The question begs to be asked, if they have the phone can't they just get the phone company to identify the owners address?

In this country at least, I'm fairly certain you can buy a pay-as-you-go SIM for cash and not be traceable. And if he was a burglar, what are the chances he didn't nick the 'phone in the first place?

    Edited to add:
Thinking about it, taking someone's 'phone with their picture on it and leaving it at the scene of the crime would be a perfect way to set them up!
