Microsoft Office Updates

I installed Office XP Pro with Frontpage and choose to only installed Word 2002, The most recent Window Update is finding updates for Excel; PowerPoint; Publisher;Outlook and Access all for 2002.

To me that means that they are on my computer some where. How do i get MU to not find the ones that I didn't select? I realized I could choose not to get the updates for the programs I don't want, but I don't want the files on my computer at all.

You can check whether Excel.exe, Powerpnt.exe, Msaccess.exe or Mspub.exe are present on your computer, in particular in the folder where you installed Office (probably C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10).

Apart from that, the easiest solution is probably to install all updates even if you don't have the applications...

I found them all, may I delete them? How about the Registry? Do I have to remove them from there too?

No, you should NOT delete them, If any thing run a "uninstall", but I would just leave them in place.

It appears that your install was for "First Use" type. As soon as you startup Word or any other program you have not installed, Office will grab the installer and finish the install. It may ask for the CD, but if you left a copy of the Setup files (MSOChache) in place, the installer will just continue with the install.

Did you find Excel.exe etc.? If so, please do NOT delete them yourself. You must uninstall the programs:

Activate the Add or Remove Programs control panel.
If you see separate entries for Excel, PowerPoint etc., select each of them, then click Remove.
Is (as is more likely) you only find an entry for Microsoft Office XP Professional, select it and click Change.
Wait until the setup window appears.
Then select Add or Remove Features, and click Next.
Click on each of the programs that you want to remove, and select Not Available from the dropdown list.
Warning: you should not remove the shared components and Office tools.
When you're done, click Update.

You're correct, when I clicked on Outlook.exe is was notified that it had to be installed first.

MSOChache is not one of my files. None of the exe files listed are in Office 10, all are in plain Office. Would that make a difference?

BTW: Mspub.exe is not on the computer.

No, that just means that you installed Office XP in that folder instead of in Office10.

Good, I thought that could have made a difference.

In one of your previous posts you told me how to go into Add/Remove and select each one I wanted to removed. I discovered that all 5 programs (access, excel, front page, outlook and power point) all already had red x's and were listed as not available. To me that means they were not installed, if this is true where in the world did MU find them to issue updates?

You mentioned that you found Excel.exe etc. That means that those programs must have been installed at some time, and that's why Microsoft Update offers updates for them.

MSOChache is a folder that you will MAY find at the root of one of your hard drives. It is a Hidden folder.

Yes, about 36 months ago, I installed the same Office program and let all of it's programs install. Since I shouldn't delete the exe programs, I'll only install the updates for Word 2002, and Office XP. Do you I should update the ones for Office 2002 as well?

Office 2002 = Office XP, so if you are offered updates for Office 2002 I'd install those too.

It's confusing, the official name for the entire suite is Office XP, but the individual programs are called Word 2002, Excel 2002 etc.

You often see people refer to Office 2002 or to Word XP.

That figures. Another way to confuse users. I wonder how long it took Microsoft to figure out another way to throw people off the track. No way would I have known that they are part and parcel of the same program without you guys.
