I am helping a friend whose DVD/RW drive is not working. In DEVICE MANAGER, the dvd drive is listed with a yellow point. When I right click on it, it then comes up with the following message: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I uninstalled the DVD/RW drive and installed another one. Windows XP recognized the new drive and installed it but again the drive was shown with a yellow exclamation saying it is not working.

I found a FIX IT from microsoft - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 but the fix did not work or solve anything.

I put the original DVD/RW drive back into the tower but still get the error listing.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

No suggestions but Garbette is having the same problem on her laptop running Vista Home. It stops recognizing the dvd drive, she trots back to the store, says something she shouldn't (like my cooler mat isn't working and maybe my laptop's getting overheated?), they respond with "it's a software issue", proceed to uninstall then install the driver - dvd drive works again. Garbette comes back, all smiles until a few weeks later when, you guessed it, right in the middle of killing off a Sim, dvd drive not recognized. Now I'm thinking a)motherboard, b)hard drive, c)dvd drive plug not seated correctly, but what do I know? I find it hard to believe that a driver can get corrupted with use and then magically being fixed upon reinstalling it.

    Good luck!

Sure, I can see a driver getting corrupted and fixed with reinstalling it. ONE TIME!
More than once? That seems unlikely.

Fortunately, this service is free, but still, what else could it be? Overheating? Cat hair? I'm at a loss.

As long as the service is free, I'd have them check out the hardware. Could be any of the hardware possibilities you listed before.

Okay - it was overheating. Got a shiny new laptop fan thingy and everything's great. Now if I could get Garbette to turn it off at night and reduce our carbon footprint....
