    Heading Styles & Printing (Word 97 SP2)

We have many documents that utilize the Heading Styles for automatic numbering. Often, when we print these documents, the automatic numbers all become the same number for each level; i.e., Level 1 numbers will all be 1.; all Level 2 numbers will be 1.1, etc. We can almost always fix this by going into the Document Map view and simply highlighting a different level in the "navigation pane". However, does anyone know of any other solutions to this problem? Do you know if this issue still exists in Office XP ...which we will be migrating to next year? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like normal behavior for outline numbering unless your Level 2 is *not* indented under Level1. What is it that you expect to see instead, and what kind of numbering did you chose?

    Hi bbennett,

If you are tying into the page numbers then perhaps you have encountered the page numbering "bug". Download the Post Service Release the fixed this problem in printing (it was fixed in both View and Print in Word 2000) and see if that takes care of it.

Here is an article that describes the bug, contains a few work arounds, and provides a link to the patch:

Do you have any macros that might be forcing a change on the document at print time?

The document map is not the world's most stable software feature and it may well be causing the problem itself. Is it displayed when you send the file to print? What heading level in the DocMap is selected when the problem occurs?

Is the numbering displayed correctly in the print preview window?

Since I'm not familiar with the problem it would help me to see the document in question. If you're willing to post it as an attachment, you'll get at least one more attempt to help.
