I have a Word 2007 file (docx) which has many links to a spreadsheet). I have removed the \a option from the link fields, and cleared the Word option to update links at open. Nonetheless, the file is very slow to open. In the folder where the Excel file is located, I can see its 'date modified' being changed to today's date, then back to the original date numerous times.

I've found the following kb article Is this the same issue? Should I install this, or would it be safer to go back to the old (.doc) format.

That looks like it might be the same problem, so I'd say it's worth a try to install the hotfix and create the registry entry.
