    Hi
In the Start menu for Windows XP there is a shortcut to the My Pictures folder, is there anyway that I can change in which folder the shortcut opens as I have heaps of photos filed in year order and would prefer to be able to open the My Pictures folder in the current year.

    Cheers

If you have set Windows to remember each folder's view settings, it should also remember your preferred sort order for the My Pictures folder. But perhaps I don't understand what exactly you want to accomplish.

I do the same thing with my photos using a folder called Pictures, that is NOT in the "Microsoft created" (My ... ) series. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the year you want. Right click and using Send To, create a desktop shortcut to the folder. See:

Then, if you use the Desktop Toolbar (from the Task Bar) you should be able to reach the folder with two clicks. Inside the folder you can set the view to whichever you like, icons, tiles, etc.

You can use TweakUI to do this.

My take on this is that you have all your pictures stored individually in the My Pictures folder in year order and not in seperate folders arranged by year. If that is the case, I don't believe there is any way to have the My Pictures folder open to the current year. You could, however, arrange all the photos in year dated folders and then set the target of that shortcut on your Start menu to point to the current year folder each January 1st.

And my suggestion is to keep the root of My Pictures as the current year, with (sub-)folders for previous years. It means anything you want to add this year gets dumped in My Pictures without a second thought, and at the end of the year, you create a 2009 folder and 'archive' everything into it.

    I like that idea better.

Thanks Stuart that's exactly what I was after.
I may not have been clear enough in my initial message. My set up is that I have the My Pictures Folder then a folder for each year since 1960 and within each folder a folder for each month. So if I want to go to say the June folder in 2009 I have to scroll through several folders until I get to it.

So at least now I can set the default to the current year and then only have to scroll to the relevant month folder. Trust this makes sense

    Cheers and thanks again
And thanks everyone else for your suggestions
