I just tried to install the new Java update 6 update 15. Error 1719 popped up that said: The Windows Installer Sevice could not be accessed . This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.

I have the installer in Services and it's set to manual and running. How do I install the Installer correctly?

Someone suggested that MSIEXEC.EXE should be registered. How is this done (step-by-step) instructions if you please, if I should take this option?

    One frustrated lady,

I saw that Hans, but I wondered if there was another solution not so complicated. I don't want to make a mistake in the registry and make matters worse than they are.

I need to get it fixed because I can't install anything that uses the Installer. Is it possible to remove it and install it again?

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

That article applies to those who have XP3 installed. What have you got for those who have XP2 installed?

If you find one, answer this first. Should I remove Window Installer first, if so , what's the procedure?

Did you read closely the article whose link Hans posted? The first method in the article is to reregister MSIEXEC which is what you asked about in your first post.

You can download the latest version from Download details: Windows Installer 4.5.

Yes Joe, I read it closely and printed it too. I was looking for something less complicated than going into the registry. That's why I want to go Viking's way if the instructions for XP2 can be located.

If the file was registered why would I need to download it again? Sorry for being so dense but that's the way it is. Is it possible to download it over the one I have and that will make it work or should Windows Installer be removed first?

This problem is driving me up a wall, I can't install anything.

This is an update to my previous post.

I tried both methods in Kb 315346 and both failed to correct the situation. I'm at a loss as what to try next. Any further suggestions are welcome.

Joe, I'm delighted to inform you that I've fixed Windows Installer 4.5. Reinstalled one of the programs that would not install before and it went right on. Now I can install the other programs and updates that were in line waiting to be installed.

The knowledge base article proved not to be so painfully orcomplicated as I thought.

Thank you all for your valuable assistance.
