I have a doc that I have been printing for several years. It suddenly changed to from Paper size = ‘A4’ to Paper size = ‘Letter’. (I swear I didn't do it and I'm the only own using it).
Now I’m stuffed. The column sizes, column divides and page margins are set and cannot be changed. If I attempt to change them – Word tells me that the combined width of the above is wider than the paper. All I can do is cancel out. If I try to re-set the paper size to A4, I get a similar message. Makes one rather upset! Catch 22 situation.
    Regards,
    Peter

Do you have a backup set to A4?

BTW, have you changed your printer settings? If the printer has been set to Letter, Word may adjust page setup automatically: there's an option "Allow A4/Letter paper resizing" in the Print tab of Tools | Options.

    Thanks Hans.
Yes I do have a backup - just wanted to find how to fix it.

I already had that "Allow A4/Letter paper resizing" set, but it doesn't help.

I had inadvertently re-set the printer defaults to 'Letter' some time ago, but corrected that after a few prints of other docs.

So I guess I will have to find a good backup.

Is it possible to remove a paper size from those available in Word or Windows? No one in Australia uses 'Letter', so it would be no great loss to see it go.
    Regards,
    Peter

Open the Printers and Fax Devices control panel.
    Select File | Server Properties.
    Activate the Forms tab.
You can see the page sizes defined on your PC.\
Select Letter and click Delete (unless that button is disabled).

    The button was disabled!
How on earth did you know that? You never cease to amaze.
The backup is an old one and is offsite. Quicker to create a new doc with A4 paper size and cut & paste the doc contents.
Thanks Hans - still in awe over you knowing this bit of obscure info.

    Peter
