guess the place

Hmm, considering the conditions, this turned out better than I thought. The sun had set, I was on a boat and the object was a long way away on the top of a mountain. Hand held 200mm telephoto lens with camera on manual (shutter 125thsec, aperture f3.8).

Any one care to suggest a location?

I'd have to say the comment on that page isn't very precise. Etna was active fairly recently but Stromboli has been bubbling away for a very long time. So long in fact that the term "Strombolian" is used to describe that type of eruption on other volcanoes.

There is a thriving trade taking boat loads of people just off the island after sunset because it's a safe bet the tourists won't be disappointed. Sure enough, in the short time (1 hour max) that the boat I was on held it's position off Stromboli there were 3 obvious displays plus a couple of more minor 'glows'. The Wikipedia page I've linked to says that guided treks to the top have been stopped since ~2007 but such tours appeared to be on offer in the town this summer and, from the boat, there were dozens of camera flashes clearly visible on the mountain above the crater; so somebody was up there getting the sort of picture on the Wiki page!

I know it's not a very good picture but I'm pleased I managed to capture something of the event.
