Install Office2000 Developer with OfficeXP OEM (2000+XP)

A brand spanking new computer is coming to me very soon with the OEM version of Office XP Small Business Edition (only Word, Excel and Outlook). For about a million reasons, I would also like to install my existing retail package of Office 2000 Developer, and the 1.5 upgrade, onto this machine

install the old office to a different directory. you may need to reinstall xp, it generally recommended to install the versions with the oldest first, ending with the newest. but i've had good luck doing it backwards when i'm doing most of my work in the older versions.

ONLY safe way is to set up a dual boot system.
Versionsd of Office can FULLY co-exist ONLY if each is in a separate bootable system and in separate directories.

For production reasons, I need to use both Office 97 and Office 2000. I installed them in different folders, and Office 97 was installed AFTER Office 2000. I experienced no problems with this configuration.

There are knowledgebase articles on installing Office 97 after Office 2000. I would imagine that much the same steps would work with Office 2000 and XP. You might get some ideas from MSKB Q218861.

Thanks, the equivalent article for XP is OFFXP: Running Multiple Versions of Microsoft Office (Q290576).

Yes, but that one says you *must* install the earlier version first. Judging from the way it worked with 2000 and 97, that probably isn't true, which is why I posted the other articles instead.

THat's even risker, i.e., installing them in the wrong order.

You;ve been lucky so far using an unsupported environment.

Re: Install Office2000 Developer with OfficeXP OEM (2000+XP)

Q290576 confirms what I said.

Such an installation does NOT permit both versions of Office to FULLY co-exist, e.g., you could not retain Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002.

ONly installation in separate bootable partitions allows FULL use of each version of Office.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I think I'll return to this experiment in a few months and just put the OEM XP in a drawer until then. There are enough variables moving from Windows 98 to 2000; I don't need the additional issues at this time.
