Run Files Locally or From Server...

    Hi,

We have a no. of files - c. 4Mb each.
Some PowerPoint Shows, other Lotus ScreenCam videos.

A HTML interface allows users to view them.

Is it better to allow users to Execute them directly from the Server, or should they be downloaded locally and then Run from the Desktop?

i.e. if multiple users execute them from the server simultaneously, will that cause problems with server performance, can it affect the bandwidth usage negatively etc?

    Pls. advise - thanks.

Re: Run Files Locally or From Server...

A lot of the answers you seek are dependent upon your network and the horsepower of the server. If your server is a file server and is optimized for delivery of files, you should not have major problems running the content from there.

However, if your network has limited bandwidth, the end users will feel the effects. The more people you have accessing large data files at any given time, the higher your bandwidth consumption will be.

I prefer to download the file and work with it locally, which takes time initially but frees you from worrying about network performance bottlenecks, and utilizes the processor of the client PC instead of relying on other points in your network to provide the resources.
