    Hi,

The attached sheet shows an average Iím trying to do across a few numbers.

Why is it giving this error?

The cells contain text values, even though they look like numbers. This often happens if you import or copy data from another application.

In Excel 2002 or later, you should see a smart tag with a little dropdown arrow when you select the cells. One of the options in the dropdown menu is to convert the values to numbers.

    If that doesn't work:
    - Select an empty cell.
    - Copy it to the clipboard.
    - Select the data cells.
    - Select Edit | Paste Special...
    - Choose the Add option.
    - Click OK.

This should convert the text values to numbers.

In addition to Hans' response if you use the method he suggests the number cells will take on the format of the cell you copied. Formatting can be saved by also selecting "Formulas and number formats" and background colours, text size and formatting will stay as per design.
