If you want to check that your firewall is doing the right thing then a great site to visit is https://www.grc.com/

Follow the links for Shields Up and you can test that your firewall really is protecting you from Internet based attacks.

Thanks - Shields Up has been mentioned before but it's good to have a separate topic for it.

(And it's gratifying to see that my PC is still stealthed)

Hm, I need a little education. After running the test I show "Stealth" (green) status on ports 0 - 1,056, but ShieldsUp! somewhat hysterically tells me that my machine replies to a ping. Do I really need to turn off ping replies? And in ZA Free, how?

That pinging your PC is enabled means that others can "see" that you exist. But since all ports are closed, they won't be able to do anything.
You can disable it by disabling inbound ICMP, but I don't think it's essential.

Added later: some internet applications such as online games and chatting may not work correctly if inbound ICMP is disabled, so be careful.
